Passion of Cricket
I have these very vague memories of 1983 world cup. I was then 3 yr old watching world cup in our new black and white(B&W) Murphy TV that my Dad had bought just to see the world cup match with our family. And that was the first time that dad had come on his 2 month leave after for the first time, since he had got a big break to work in the overseas.
As a 3 year old since I didn’t understand the game much and the did not understand the emotions running each time Indians used to hit a six and four with the bat or take a wicket. I used to dance and roar with the crowd…….here the crowd resembles my 4 uncles, my father, my mother, my grandpa, my grand mom, my uncles set of 5 – 6 friends , our dear neighbours families (we had about 3 neighbours then) my mom and my neighbour aunties who used to break- in those roaring’s , since most of the time they were in our kitchen preparing delicious vadapav’s and samosas for the hungry crowds screaming their lungs outside whenever Kapil hits a four or a six and the crowd in my drawing room used to roar a fourrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and sixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. It was a descent crowd of 30 people sitting in my drawing room and watching the final that was been played delayed live by 5 mins when it was shown in BBC then….Televisions was considered a luxury then and one in say 25 families had TV’s then. I remember we were the only few families in our colonies having TV. For my grandparents obvious that was a matter of pride. But the most important thing was watching cricket on TV. The feeling is the same then and now when we see India playing a game of cricket, and now we watch cricket in our colour flat/Plasma/LCD/LED televisions.
I remember My grandma used to be a huge Kapil Dev fan….she was such a biggggggggg fan of Kapil Dev that she used to leave all her work and sit down glued to the TV to watch Kapil’s innings and when he gets out or finishes with his bowling overs that’s the time she used to get up and finish her remaining part of work. Each time Kapil used to hit a hundred or gets the man of the match she used to treat us with her oooh- so- famous and delicious payasam (kheer – dessert) .She was very confident then of India clinching the world cup then in that very particular day when India played with West Indies, since she knows Kapil is man in the team. Right from the start of the game I used to hear her saying that “Kapil Dev is there, so don’t worry” … And believe it or not India got the cup home and then what we had a chance to have her famous payasam, which she had prepared for all of us home. Often my uncles used to jokingly say how we wish India plays a cricket match every day and Kapil plays a superb knock in every games so that we can relish her payasam….it was like a wedding party at home ….
We are a huge nation cricket crazy and we don’t mind screaming our lungs out even if we are in the middle of the road whenever India performs, as we proudly say that in India we treat Cricket as Religion. Religion remains the same only the Gods of the game has changed from Kapil then to Sachin (Tendulkar) now. Since most of us in India are huge fans of this particular game called Cricket . We go ecstatic every time India wins a match.
We tend to forget our work , our most important assignments, our most important exams, we put it aside for few hours, at this point we make the best use of our technology and the best resources just to catch the game on our televisions’ or to get a quick score on our mobile phones. Even at work we catch or get the scores update or even keep the game running live in our computer screen while continuing to do our work. We don’t forget to subscribe on the live cricket scores on mobile and we don’t mind spending a ton on its subscription charges. If we happen to be out on the site and all these options are not available, we don’t forget to catch the game live running on 100’s of TV’s in the TV showroom and we don’t mind standing outside the TV showrooms or rubbing our shoulders with even with the bizarre person standing next to us and don’t mind even if he is uncanny , had brushed his teeth or had a bath in week. All this for the love of this game called - Cricket.
And yes…WE have Done it Again…….in 2011 , and now we have images of Dhoni hitting a six of the four needed…we have got the coveted cup again…and now we have new images of this epic and historic win to show our generations….and we see the inspired India on Saturday night regained the coveted World Cup after 28 years as they suppressed Sri Lanka with a six-wicket victory in a nerve-wrecking final to script a glorious new chapter in their cricketing history.
This might be the third or fourth generation watching 2011 world cup, since our World Cup victory in 1983 , We just can’t stop seeing the images again and again....we r still glued to the TV catching the latest news from the team and love seeing those pics again....it’s something we can share ...we can tell our coming generations ...it’s an inspiration for them....they have worked hard to achieve and WIN it for our nation more than for themselves....n the end, it was a bruising war of attrition that won India the World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday night of 2nd April 2011.The whole nation and millions of Indians living abroad were glued to the TV, praying to their favourite God for this amazing win. We all came together for just one battle to be won. And we are all drenched in euphoria over the historic Cricket World Cup victory, India today knew no bounds in celebrating the triumph of its Men in Blue as the joyous country showered them with praises and awards after all their prayers were answered after 28 long years…and we have enough reasons to celebrate. We saw the streets overjoyed , elated with people throwing their hearts out, dancing and all praising the team effort.
Whenever the opponents play against India, they are not only playing against the 11 Indians, they play against 1.2 billion Indians living across the world.
We saw the team dedicating the win to a particular person (Sachin Tendulkar). It happens only in India and only Dhoni and his team did that magic.
I’m absolutely elated with a feeling that I got to witness 2 world cup wins of India, though the former win could not get my heart and soul to completely sink in the feeling but it made quite a deep impact on my mind the way my family and neighbours celebrated that day and today when I witnessed the WIN again, I happen to feel the emotions that crowd and the whole nation felt way back in 1983. The feeling is awesome and deeply overwhelming it really poured my heart towards Team India. It was like a mission accomplished. How I wished my grandparents, especially my grand mom who was a huge cricket fan were alive to see the history been repeated again and we got to relish her delicious payasam.
Cricket runs in our blood, the understanding and nuances about the game automatically absorbs in our blood, nobody teaches us the game and I’m sure when my daughter grows up the love for the game will automatically guzzle in her and we don’t have to particularly teach her the game. She was a part of our celebrations yesterday after our fabulous win she enjoyed every bit of the cheering that we did the images of India’s win will forever remain in her heart and lets hope she (and the coming generations) doesn’t have to wait 28 long years for another World Cup Victory.
As for now let the feeling sink in and lets rejoice.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
INDIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA INDIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
